We lay our heads…

November 8, 2009

Yesterday I ventured around Sycamore Canyon and dropped by to watch the surf at county line (which was firing and looked super fun). Instead of my board and wetsuit I brought an old Nikon FM2 and a couple rolls of 160NC. Its been a while since I’ve pulled that guy out and actually used it. The camera is a tank and has taken quite a few diggers in its day, but despite it all it just keeps on tickin’. I’ll post some photos once I get em back from the lab and scanned. Yesterday was the first time I had driven into Malibu (southbound) since moving to Camarillo and I must say, it was a whole new experience and I think where I’m at in my life had a lot to do with it. I experienced its beauty from a new perspective, in a new light and it was amazing. Living out in Camarillo has left us feeling a bit disconnected at times, we’re now out of the city and close to family but not a whole lot of friends yet. Yesterday, I felt more comfortable than ever, I really took in how amazing this area is, my back yard is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Great surf breaks, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, we have it all. The agriculture is amazing, the local produce simply cannot be beat. I feel blessed to be raising a family here and am super excited to experience it all with them. If anyone even happens to get this far, I can tell you that expecting a child changes your thought process, you mentally prepare yourself to deal with the world that is awaiting your child. How to make it a better environment for them. We’re down the home stretch now, Sarah is full term and we have about 3 weeks before the set due date, whether the little guys comes that day, a week early or a week late, he is coming soon and I think the emotions are starting to kick in. This won’t be common routine to post about this subject but it is my blog, my experiences, my life and I appreciate the outlet. How about a photo?

Here is a snap from my swim yesterday.

Play Days…

November 4, 2009

I often find myself diddle daddlin’ with Photoshop and stepping out of my normal retouching routine (which isn’t much of one), especially when the office is calling for duties. Unaffected by the pile of papers lingering on my desk, invoices awaiting completion, images sitting in the processing que….my attention goes towards creating pieces like this. It’s fun, creative and detours me from the mundane. What do you do? Email me some art, I like it all…we can trade? Print for print? Email me here: rennie@renniesolis.com

PS – I’m actually a pretty responsible cat…the photo below is Vanessa of Family of the Year.

Back in LA, HOT SUNNY LA…

October 28, 2009

Yep, NYC was amazing but I bailed just before the weather turned and got nasty. I shot a job for AOL’s StyleList on Friday in Dumbo and it was just starting to get chilly. I have to give it up to the amazing crew and models for being the troopers they are, we had a pretty darn good time!

I had a lot of time to think on that trip, I spent many hours hopping in and out of cars, trains & walking blocks upon blocks of the stimulating New York streets. I didn’t carry a camera often but I ended up writing some journal logs which contain stories I’d like to translate onto film. I’ll keep ya posted on those ;)

Until then, the pic below is Faini and the very talented Dar from yesterday afternoon, we marched around downtown LA for Etnies shooting under the blazing sun. No permits, one light, good company and a stinky van that was just returned by the skate team. The smell was a mixture of a good time and one too many sweaty shirts piled under the seats. Speaking of the skate team, they won this years Transworld Skate & Create, congrats to them and Supervising Art Director Terry Snyder who I have the privilege to work with often. You can check out the video here!

Levi’s New Americans…

October 21, 2009

I was up in SF this past weekend for the Levi’s New Americans unveiling. I was one out of five photogs who won the contest they held. The others include Colleen Leslie and Carlos Mendez…Good kids, good times and a $500 shopping spree courtesy of Levi’s. Thank you kind people :)

I’m now in NYC and certainly not trying to brag but…I think I brought a little California sunshine with me. Its amazing here!

And if you’re curious which one is mine, its the image of Daughters, the singer laying in the crowd shot in Anaheim at Chain Reaction. The show was BANANAS.

Playing for the home crowd…

October 17, 2009

At home on a Thursday evening throwing together fish tacos and listening to the very talented Jaime Wyatt and Kyong. As intimate as it gets when they perform in your living room. Music has always been such a great inspiration to me, both in film and photography. I can get so much out of a song, a great one can easily cast a creative spell of inspiration and get me excited about a project. I’ve recently been spinning 70’s classic rock and a lot of  “Dark Side of the Moon”, it’s an incredible album. I think it would be amazing to create a world on film much like David Gilmour and Roger Waters created in their lyrics. Songs have always set me off running with imagination, its such a great way to conceptualize. The beauty of music is the ability to create your own interpretation. It might be the song writers interpretation or it may contradict. The important part is what does the listener get out of it? Just listen.

New Brett Simpson Ad…

September 29, 2009

I shot this a couple months back…the money is real, the Veuve was real, the party stays real and we had a real awesome time.

If you hadn’t heard, Brett won the US Open which paid out a nice BIG PURSE of a Hunnnered Grand. Yep, a Hunnnered.
